On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of his birth, the French Post has put into circulation on October 23, 2017 (general sale) an interesting engraved stamp dedicated to the French writer Joseph Peyré (1892-1968).
Created and engraved by Christophe Laborde-Balen (his 3rd stamp for Phil@poste), that stamp (€ 1.10, print run: 800,016) is present on the First Day cover below, with postmarks from Paris dated October 20, 2017. Thank you very much Joël!
The preview sale of that stamp was held on October 20 and 21, 2017 at the "Carré d'Encre" in Paris but also in Garlin (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) in his native region of Béarn, near the village of Aydie where he was born and was buried.
Christophe Laborde-Balen also designed the First Day cancellation (I love it!) composed of 3 books with one including the portrait of Joseph Peyré.

This same portrait is featured on the left on this elegant stamp, next to a caravan in the Sahara Desert, probably a reference to his novel "White Squadron" (1931), Renaissance Prize.
This Sahara desert ("Eternal Sahara", "Voyage marocain"...) is a recurring theme in the work of Joseph Peyré, with also Spain and the universe of the high mountains ("Matterhorn", "Mount Everest"...).
His most famous novel, "Sang et lumières" (1935), Prix Goncourt, evokes in particular bullfighting.
The heroes of his novels are ordinary human beings, marked by the surpassing of oneself, the thirst for the absolute or the quest for different world...
For the anecdote, it was Emmanuel Macron, then Minister of the Economy, who validated in 2016 the inscription of that stamp to the philatelic program 2017, following a request of MP David Habib and Serge Le Prest, president of the "Groupe philatélique béarnais".
